Xeomin vs. Botox: Understanding the Difference

Xeomin vs. Botox: Understanding the Difference

Introduction

Xeomin & Botox are both popular treatments for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The purpose of our blog post today is to educate our readers on both of them to help them decide which product is best for you. At Lee Rose Aesthetics, we primarily offer Xeomin and do not carry Botox.

What is Botox?

a brand name for botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It temporarily paralyzes or weakens muscles by blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contraction.

  • Botox is most commonly used for cosmetic purposes, primarily to treat wrinkles and fine lines, such as crow's feet, forehead lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows (also known as glabellar lines).

  • It works by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles that cause these wrinkles, creating a smoother and more youthful appearance.
  • Botox was initially approved for medical purposes. It is used to treat conditions like chronic migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), muscle spasms, overactive bladder, and strabismus (crossed eyes).

  • Botox results are temporary, typically lasting 3 to 6 months. Over time, the muscle action gradually returns, and the wrinkles or lines reappear, requiring follow-up treatments to maintain results.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin contains botulinum toxin type A, just like Botox, but it has a key difference: Xeomin does not contain any additives or complexing proteins that Botox does. This gives it the nickname “naked Botox or Smart Tox."

This lack of additives is significant because it may reduce the risk of the body building up a resistance to the treatment over time, which can happen with Botox.

  • Like Botox, Xeomin is used to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles by blocking the nerve signals to the muscles. This results in a smoother appearance, particularly in areas like:
    • Frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
    • Forehead lines
    • Crow's feet around the eyes
  • Xeomin works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause these wrinkles, helping to give the skin a smoother, more youthful look.

In addition to its cosmetic uses, Xeomin is also FDA-approved to treat several medical conditions, including:

  • Cervical dystonia (a neurological condition that causes muscle spasms in the neck)
  • Blepharospasm (involuntary blinking or spasms of the eyelid muscles)
  • Chronic migraines
  • Overactive bladder
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)

Key Differences Between Xeomin and Botox

  • No Additives: As mentioned, Xeomin doesn't contain the protective proteins found in Botox, which may make it a good option for people who have developed a resistance to Botox. Xeomin has 16 less ingredients than Botox.

  • Onset of Results: Xeomin may take effect a little faster than Botox in some cases, but results from both treatments typically appear within 3 to 14 days.

  • Duration: The results from both Xeomin and Botox usually last around 3 to 6 months, but some studies suggest Xeomin may last a bit longer for certain individuals.

  • Storage: Xeomin does not require refrigeration before it is mixed, which may make it easier to handle and store compared to Botox.

Advantages of Xeomin

  • Fewer Additives: For people who may have developed a resistance to Botox, Xeomin offers an alternative with no complexing proteins.
  • Less Risk of Allergic Reaction: Because Xeomin contains fewer components, there may be a lower risk of an allergic reaction for some individuals.
  • Similar Results to Botox: Xeomin delivers similar, effective results to Botox for treating wrinkles and other conditions.
